Hiding behind the fragile skirt of the Constitution, which was written in 1776, is a flimsy excuse for demanding the right to keep and bear arms, when you have no conscience, and no moral gravity to face the hypocrisy of your own words, Mr. Porter. As others have clarified the original intent voiced in our Constitution — the right to maintain a militia that can protect the citizens — then what is needed now is an amendment that articulates that gun ownership by every Tom, Dick and Harry is not an inalienable right — but rather it is a responsibility that must be borne with a commitment to serve and protect our citizens by adhering to rules that are articulated in our local and national laws. Among those rules is the requirement that every gun own be registered, and licensed, AND investigated by our government system to ensure that every gun owner is not a criminal, not a murderer, and not a wife abuser. The number of guns an individual is permitted to possess should be determined by law, and individuals should not be allowed to own and display, use and display veritable arsenals that could supply a standing army, nor should they be permitted to buy ammunition at such a rate that all their guns may be fulled loaded at any time. Our American republic is a veritable standing army on any day of the week. We could overthrow our government at any time because of it. We are all automated, many of us are segregated, and the majority of us are mobile, with a full cache of weaponry and ammo, and a computerized communication network system that we can use to mobile a full offensive on each other, on our government, on the world. This whole situation is not just terrifying, it’s crazy, irresponsible and ridiculous.

This wonderfully thoughtful satire was deeply revealing. I really appreciate getting a full understanding of how gun rights advocates and gun owners view their rights.
